Experienced Maryland Medical Malpractice Lawyers

Medical errors can result in devastating injuries and losses. In this country, medical negligence is far from rare – in fact, statistics show that the number of people that die each year in the United States because of medical malpractice is higher than those who die from AIDS, breast cancer, or car crashes.

Medical Mistakes 3rd Largest Cause of Death

In an article written by Dr. Barbara Starfield for the Journal of the American Medical Association (“JAMA”), entitled “Is the U.S. Really the Best in the World?” the doctor revealed that 225,000 deaths each year are caused by iatrogenic causes, making them the third leading cause of death, just below cancer and heart disease.

What are “iatrogenic causes”? They are unintentional, adverse effects or complications that are either caused by or which result from medical care, treatment, or advice. Iatrogenic causes are medical errors, which Dr. Starfield broke down in her report as:

  • 7,000 deaths each year due to medication errors in hospitals

  • 12,000 deaths each year due to unnecessary surgery

  • 20,000 deaths each year due to other hospital errors

  • 80,000 deaths each year due to nosocomial infections in hospitals

  • 106,000 deaths each year due to adverse effects to properly prescribed medications

  • The truth is that doctors can make mistakes – as can other health care providers – and when they do, the consequences can be disastrous

Some of the most common medical errors, or medical malpractice, involve: failure to correctly diagnose; failure to diagnose at all; failure to properly treat, or not treating at all; failure to order tests; failure to properly evaluate test results; failure to monitor the patient; failing to prescribe the right drugs; failing to prescribe medication in the proper dosage; and surgery errors, such as operating on the wrong body part or leaving surgical sponges, etc., within the body.
